Building Community Beyond Belief, Exercising Progressive Values, and Defending Separation of Church and State

SHL’s 2026 Spring Potluck Picnic was a tremendous success, and we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at Wannamaker County Park on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

We had an incredible turnout of 58 people, including 48 adults, 2 teens, and 8 children—along with 4 canine companions who seemed to enjoy the attention. With beautiful weather, abundant food, and excellent company, it was one of our most joyful and well-attended events yet.

A special congratulations and thank you goes to Sarah Fretz and Scott Payne for joining the SHL Board of Directors. We are excited to have them step into leadership roles. We also want to express our sincere gratitude to outgoing board member Molly Flueckiger for her service and contributions to SHL.

Many thanks are also due to Howard and Melanie for generously manning the grill and helping keep everyone fed, and to Heyward for saving the day with an emergency bun run.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who attended, brought food, games, and good conversation, and helped create such a welcoming and vibrant gathering. Events like this are a reminder of how meaningful community is.

Spring Potluck 2026

Join us at 11:30 am on Sunday, May 17th for SHL’s annual spring picnic at Wannamaker County Park, and enjoy food and fellowship with your humanist friends. Please RSVP!

If you’ve never been to an SHL event, we’d especially like to welcome you. We invite you to bring food and drinks to share, but we always have more than plenty so it is totally fine to come empty handed. Your company is enough!

The RSVP will give you a chance to report what you plan to bring (if anything). We will share what people report on a google sheet which you can view here. Note that we have to update this manually–it is not automated with the Action Network form.

We have reserved the Dogwood Canopy which is a private, fenced-in wooded area with picnic tables, grills and a canopy in case of rain. Dual entry gates make it a safe place to bring your dog(s) to meet your humanist friends.

Take advantage of all Wannamaker has to offer. Let the little kids play in the sprinkler and at at the playground! Get your exercise on the trails and bring your frisbee, bocce ball, croquet or volleyball. You can also play disc golf at the 18-hole disc golf course, and there are horseshoes, too. Rent a boat or a bike, or go to the waterpark.

We will also be holding annual elections for the SHL Board of Directors. Everyone is welcome at the picnic, but only dues-paying members are eligible to vote. If you are not currently a dues-paying member, you can join or renew your membership: https://www.joinit.org/o/shl
We promise to keep business short and sweet. Our focus for the day is revelry!

Admission to Wannamaker County Park is $2/person, or free for annual pass holders. Last year some people had a difficult time finding us so we have created a document with a map and details to help you find us.

Note that our official start time is 11:30 am, but we have the private Dogwood Canopy space reserved from 9 am to 5 pm. The park is open from 8 am to 8 pm, so if the weather is nice, we invite members and friends of SHL to spend as much of the day enjoying all the park has to offer as you wish.
