After a long, sweltering Charleston summer, fall may finally be here—and SHL has a big weekend planned to take advantage of it. With clear skies and mild temperatures in the forecast, we have six different opportunities to spend time in community with your fellow humanists, five of them outdoors. There’s community service, activism and outreach, family time, a walk for a good cause, an evening on the water, and—for the indoor cats among us—a discussion of a highly acclaimed novel. Some of these events overlap, so we’re certainly not suggesting you try to do them all! The point is that there’s a lot to choose from. Find the event that sounds like your kind of weekend and come spend some time with SHL.
👟 Walk to Fight Hunger — Saturday Morning
SHL is proud to be an Event Partner for the Lowcountry Food Bank’s 6th Annual Walk to Fight Hunger at Wannamaker County Park. Join the SHL team for a walk in support of the Lowcountry Food Bank and its work fighting food insecurity throughout our community. You can walk with us, donate to the SHL team, or do both. We are just under $100 away from our goal of $1,750 raised. Every $1 raised helps provide three meals, making this a great opportunity to put our humanist values into action while enjoying what should be a beautiful morning outside.
Saturday, September 26 | 10:30 am | Wannamaker County Park

🧚 Feminist Magic Market — Saturday Afternoon
If a festival is more your speed, SHL will also be at the Feminist Magic Market in Park Circle on Saturday. We’ll have a table in the Give Back Garden behind Itinerant Books, introducing people to SHL and handing out buttons, stickers, and other humanist swag. Our volunteer shifts are already covered, so we’re simply inviting members and friends to come enjoy the market, browse the vendors, and stop by the SHL table to say hello and show your support.
Saturday, September 26 | 11 am–4 pm | Park Circle

🛶 Full Moon Kayak Tour — Saturday Evening
For those who would rather spend Saturday evening on the water, join us for a Full Moon Kayak Tour through the saltwater estuary behind Folly Beach. We’ll paddle as the sun sets in the west and the Harvest Moon rises over the Atlantic. Beginners are welcome, and Charleston Outdoor Adventures provides the equipment and guides. The SHL discounted price is $40, and we currently have six spots available, so reserve yours today if this sounds like your kind of adventure.
Saturday, September 26 | 5:55–8:15 pm | Charleston Outdoor Adventures, Bowens Island

🚯 Adopt-A-Highway — Sunday Morning
If you’d like to spend part of your Sunday doing something tangible for the community, join SHL for our Adopt-A-Highway cleanup along our adopted two-mile stretch of Azalea Drive in North Charleston. It’s a simple way to make a visible difference while getting some fresh air and enjoying the company of fellow humanists. Trash bags, gloves, and safety vests will be provided.
Sunday, September 27 | 9:30–11 am | The Bend, 3775 Azalea Drive, North Charleston

🤸♀️ Secular Families Nature Walk — Sunday Morning
Families have another option Sunday morning with a Secular Families Nature Walk at Rosebrock Park in Summerville. Bring the kids to explore, run, play, and make new friends while parents and caregivers get a chance to connect with other secular families. The group will gather at 10:30 and begin the walk around 11. Snacks or lunches are encouraged, and all ages are welcome.

📚 Book Club: Midnight’s Children — Sunday Afternoon
And lest our more indoor types feel neglected amid all this talk of walking, kayaking, street fairs, parks, and roadside cleanups, we have something for you too. The SHL Book Club meets Sunday afternoon to discuss Salman Rushdie’s acclaimed Midnight’s Children, a sweeping novel that intertwines the life of Saleem Sinai—born at the moment of Indian independence—with the history of modern India. We’ll meet comfortably indoors at the We Are Family Community Center in North Charleston, with an optional trip to Rebel Taqueria afterward for anyone who wants to keep the conversation going.
Sunday, September 27 | 4–6 pm | We Are Family Community Center, North Charleston

Six events, two days, and plenty of ways to find your kind of community. One of the things that makes SHL special is that being part of this community can mean many different things: service, activism, family activities, outdoor adventures, intellectual discussion, or simply spending time with people who share humanist values. You don’t have to do everything—just find the things that speak to you and show up. We hope to see you somewhere this weekend.
