SHL tabled at an event hosted by PFLAG Charleston and the College of Charleston Special Collections on Saturday, August 29, 2026. They screened a short documentary film, Dawn: A Charleston Legend, about Dawn Langley Simmons, one of Charleston’s pioneering transgender women and a trailblazer whose life intersected with the city’s LGBTQ+ and racial history. Staff and a student from College of Charleston’s Special Collections then made a short presentation about stories of Charleston’s LGBTQIA+ history and the Special Collections current exhibit featuring archival material and portraits showing the lives and experiences of Charleston’s queer community.
Additional organizations that tabled at the event were Charleston Pride, Free Mom Hugs, and The Velvet Pony (a new queer bar opening soon in North Charleston).
