The Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry (SHL) raised $1,651.30 for the Lowcountry Food Bank’s 6th annual Walk to Fight Hunger and was recognized as the event’s top fundraising team.* Helping others is fundamental to our humanist values. We believe in our responsibility to one another and in building a more compassionate and equitable community through human action.
We put those values into practice year-round through volunteer service and mutual aid, including monthly volunteer shifts at the Lowcountry Food Bank and food distribution with Park Circle Cares. For the Walk to Fight Hunger, we took that commitment a few steps further—walking together and raising funds to help fight hunger in our community.
In addition to the $1,651.30 raised by our team, SHL contributed $500 from our operating funds to become an Event Partner. That gave us an opportunity to table at the event, meet people from across the community, and increase awareness of the Lowcountry’s active secular community. We also invited our friends from Park Circle Cares to share our table and help spread the word about the important work they do.
More than 204,000 people across coastal South Carolina face food insecurity, including more than 48,000 children. Funds raised through the Walk directly support Lowcountry Food Bank programs serving our neighbors throughout the region, and every $1 donated can help provide three meals.
Adding the event partnership donation to the fundraising for the walk, the SHL community contributed about $2,151 to the food bank, enabling them to provide 6,454 more meals to people in the lowcountry. That is humanism in action!
If you missed the Walk, you can still help make efforts like this possible. SHL’s community service, public outreach, and support for organizations doing important work throughout the Lowcountry are funded by people who believe that humanist values should be put into action.
Your support gives us the resources to show up. Donations and membership dues help SHL serve our neighbors, support community partners, and demonstrate that secular people are committed to building a more compassionate and equitable Lowcountry.

*Early in the fundraising period, SHL was at the top of the team leaderboard for fundraising. Mid-way through we were overtaken by the Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) Foundation Board. After another fundraising push including a video on social media, we retook the top spot for a while, but in the end both the LCFB Foundation Board and LCFB Board overtook us, and we ended at the #3 spot on the leaderboard. Still totally respectable! But I guess they thought it unseemly to award teams associated with LCFB so at the event they recognized SHL as the top fundraising team. We appreciate the recognition and the attention it brings to our secular community!
