We raised $1,116 for our Q4 2023 Charity of the Quarter, Defense of Democracy.
Defense of Democracy was established just one year ago to fight back against Christian Nationalists at the grassroots level. They advocate for parents, teachers, students, librarians and all Americans who are fighting every day to protect their civil rights from hate groups. They have established chapters across the country, mobilizing communities and protecting our families and public schools. Defense of Democracy is made up of people from all walks of life and includes subgroups like “Veterans Defending Democracy,” “Youth Defending Democracy,” and “Librarians Defending Democracy.”
Defense of Democracy is also a nonpartisan organization, and welcomes anyone who opposes the oppression of their fellow Americans, particularly those in marginalized communities. Some of their most vocal advocates are individuals who consider themselves “conservative,” but happen to know and love people in the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.
The South Carolina chapter of Defense of Democracy is led by SHL member Allan Morris, and we recently worked together on an action to raise awareness of book banning efforts in Charleston County schools.
