Building Community Beyond Belief, Exercising Progressive Values, and Defending Separation of Church and State

We raised $695 for our Q3 2025 Charity of the Quarter, Just Bee, a South Carolina-based nonprofit advocating for the Autistic and Neurodivergent community.

Founded by Layla Luna, a passionate mother and advocate inspired by her nonverbal Autistic son, Just Bee is building a world where neurodivergent individuals are not only seen—but understood, supported, and celebrated. From pushing landmark legislation like Rio’s Law—which created the first license plate in the country alerting first responders to an autistic passenger—to launching educational outreach programs like Just Bee My Friend, Layla and her team are creating tangible change in our communities.

We welcomed Layla Luna as our guest speaker at SHL’s monthly gathering on Sunday, July 20th. We heard her powerful story, learned about Just Bee’s mission, and discovered how we can all help build a more inclusive Lowcountry. The event was covered in the local news, and a video of her presentation is on our YouTube page:

Just Bee’s work includes:

  • Training programs for businesses and first responders

  • The Just Bee app, helping families find welcoming spaces

  • School programs to build empathy and inclusion from a young age

  • Advocacy at the state level for policy that protects and empowers

Their vision is bold: to make the Just Bee logo a universal symbol of hope, inclusion, and empowerment for the Autistic and Neurodiverse community.

As secular humanists, we believe in compassion grounded in action. That’s why we invite you to join us in supporting Just Bee this quarterEvery dollar you give goes directly to expanding their outreach, education, and support services—helping ensure that no family feels alone, and every child is seen for their possibilities, not their limitations.
