Building Community Beyond Belief, Exercising Progressive Values, and Defending Separation of Church and State

More than 35 members of the SHL community showed up and stood proud today at the “No Kings” protest in North Charleston—joining thousands of neighbors in a powerful, visible stand for democracy.

For two hours, from 3 to 5 p.m., an estimated 7,000 people lined both sides of Ashley Phosphate Rd in North Charleston, stretching for more than half a mile. SHL members were right there in the mix—holding signs, waving to passing cars, and adding our voices to a chorus that was impossible to ignore.

This was not just a local action. It was part of a coordinated nationwide day of protest, with millions of people across the country taking to the streets to push back against abuses of power and to demand accountability. Here in the Lowcountry, we helped bring that message home.

The energy was palpable. Cars honked in support, people cheered one another on, and there was a shared sense that collective action matters—that showing up matters.

We are proud of our community. We are proud of everyone who stood with us. And we are just getting started.
