For our regular meeting on Sunday, March 1st, Deb Britt will be hosting the movie club to watch Across the Universe, the winner of our vote for favorite musical. Movie club members nominated 21 musicals, then voted by ranking their five favorite nominees. Across the Universe narrowly beat out Hamilton to be our top ranked musical.
Join us on Sunday, March 1st at 5 pm at Deb Britt’s house for a private screening and discussion. This will not be posted to Meetup, but all are welcome. Email shl@lowcountryhumanists.org to RSVP and request the address.
We will order pizza from Paisano’s Pizza Grill before we start the movie. Attendees are also invited to bring any snacks, treats or beverages you’d like to share.
After the movie, we will take a short break, and then anyone who wishes to stay will have a discussion of the film, our favorite musicals, and anything else people care to discuss.
From visionary director of stage and screen, Julie Taymor, Across the Universe (2007) is a jukebox musical set against the cultural upheaval of the late 1960s. The film follows Jude (Jim Sturgess), a young Liverpudlian who moves to the United States, and Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), an American college student, as they fall in love amid the Vietnam War, civil rights protests, and a rapidly changing counterculture. Told almost entirely through reimagined songs by The Beatles, the story blends romance, politics, and surreal visual sequences to evoke the era’s idealism, disillusionment, and search for meaning.
