Building Community Beyond Belief, Exercising Progressive Values, and Defending Separation of Church and State

Come see My Dead Friend Zoe with your humanist friends! We are going to the 3:55 showing at Citadel Mall Stadium 16 Theater on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

My Dead Friend Zoe is a dark comedy-drama that follows Merit (Star Trek Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran grappling with PTSD and the haunting presence of her deceased best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales). As Merit navigates strained family relationships, including conflicts with her Vietnam veteran grandfather (Ed Harris), she finds herself in a cozy-dysfunctional friendship with Zoe’s ghost, insulating her from the world. Despite encouragement from her VA group counselor (Morgan Freeman) and the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), Merit’s journey toward healing is both poignant and darkly humorous, offering a visceral look at the veteran experience.

You can use the link below to purchase tickets. Tickets are assigned seating, and Tucker and Charles have purchased seats E6 and E7. Sit wherever you like, but we encourage you to check the comments below to see which seats your SHL friends have purchased, and buy seats next to them, in front of them, behind them, near them… then post your seat choice in the comments below.

After the movie those who wish will be going to Los Reyes Mexican Restaurant in West Ashley, located at about 1.5 miles from the theater at 1119 Wapoo Rd, for drinks, food and to discuss the film. If you don’t want to attend the showing, feel free to join us to discuss the film afterwards. We should get there a little before 6 pm depending on the number of commercials and previews. If you want to reach out to me ahead of time, I’d be happy to text you when we leave the theater. Please just let me know so I can try to get a big enough table.

Movie Selection:
The SHL Movie club normally meets on the first Sunday of the month. Films are usually chosen by a ranked choice vote. An email with the voting link is sent to the movie club mailing list about 10 days before the film. If you are not on the movie club mailing list, but would like to vote on future film selections email shl@lowcountryhumanists.org and ask to be added to the list.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, SHL has funds available to ensure everyone feels welcome and able to participate. If the cost of participation presents a challenge, please email us at shl@lowcountryhumanists.org, and we can discreetly arrange to cover your costs.
