There are many ways to remember the people who have mattered in our lives. On Sunday, November 1, the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry will come together for a special Day of the Dead celebration devoted to remembering and celebrating those we have loved and lost—friends, family members, or pets.
We’ll create colorful memorials together, share a potluck meal, and spend the afternoon telling stories and sharing memories of those who have been important in our lives. This isn’t intended to be a somber occasion. It’s a celebration of life, love, and memory.
Sunday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m.
Honeycup Picnic Shelter
Pine Trace Park
303 Chandler Creek Rd, Ladson, SC
We’ll provide craft supplies so you can create a memorial “headstone” for someone you would like to remember. Add a name, dates, an epitaph, photographs, drawings, decorations, or whatever feels meaningful to you. If you’d rather create your memorial at home, you’re welcome to make it in advance and bring it with you.
We’ll display our memorials together and spend time sharing the stories behind them. Who were these people? What did we love about them? What made them laugh? What do we still remember years later? This is a chance not simply to mark a loss, but to introduce others to someone who mattered to us.
And because this is a celebration, there will be food! Please bring a dish to share for our potluck.
We’ll also have decorations, music, paper flowers, crafts, and face painting. Feel free to dress colorfully and festively for the occasion.
This is a family-friendly, all-ages event, and you don’t need to create a memorial to participate. Come for the food, the activities, the company, and a different way of remembering and celebrating those we have lost.
All ages welcome!
Entrance to the park is $2 per person. Thanks to the generosity of our members and donors, SHL has funds available to ensure everyone feels welcome and able to participate. If you would like to join the celebration but the cost would prevent you from doing so, please email us at shl@lowcountryhumanists.org, and we can discreetly arrange to cover your costs.
