Building Community Beyond Belief, Exercising Progressive Values, and Defending Separation of Church and State

In case you haven’t heard, there is a shortage in poll workers for the 2026 elections. According to election officials, more than 770,000 poll workers managed the last general election but nearly 50% of jurisdictions reported difficulty in hiring people to fill those roles. This is a rather serious issue as poll workers are essential to ensure safe and fair elections for all.

Being a poll worker is easy, rewarding and fun! As a poll worker, you will have the opportunity to learn a new skillset, serve your community, meet your neighbors, and become involved in the electoral process. Participants complete a full training on election equipment and procedures before working election day, and there is always a seasoned election official nearby if you need help.

For humanists, this also presents an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to service and participation—putting our values into action in ways that strengthen our communities while building deeper connections with the people around us.

Poll worker shifts usually start before the polls open at 7 a.m. for early morning setup and end after the polls close at 7 p.m.

Poll workers are temporary employees of the local county election board. They are assigned to polling locations on Election Day, and work to ensure a fair, safe, and accessible process for all voters. Poll workers are usually needed for both the primary and the general elections and are paid a stipend for their time.
