Building Community Beyond Belief, Exercising Progressive Values, and Defending Separation of Church and State

The wonderful book, Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, has been made into a new Netflix movie that will premier Mother’s Day weekend. With Beth Balkite graciously hosting us at Overture, we invite you to this book club/ movie club crossover event. Join us to watch the new movie, and then discuss the film and book on Saturday, May 9th at 2:30 pm in the Reel Room at Overture on Daniel Island.

Remarkably Bright Creatures is a light hearted, fun, and easy book, and well worth the read. The trailer for the film looks pretty good, and who doesn’t love Sally Field?! She is well cast for the role.

Of course, you need not read the book to come to the screening and participate in the discussion.

A second book recommendation for the especially bookish among us is Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery. There is a striking overlap with stories told in the Soul of an Octopus and plot elements of Remarkably Bright Creatures. Subsequent googling revealed that the Shelby Van Pelt was partially inspired by Soul of an Octopus. So, if fiction is not your jam, or if you just can’t get enough about cephalopods, give it a try.
