What We Do
The Secular Humanists of the Lowcounty builds community for people free from supernatural belief, provides mutual aid to promote and exercise progressive values, and defends the separation of church and state through secular activism.
Mission
We are committed to the application of reason, science, and experience to better understand the universe and to solve human problems. Our ethics and moral authority stem from the Humanist principles of critical reasoning and consideration of the consequences to all parties, rather than from any claims of the supernatural.
We work to protect and promote the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to maintain the separation of church and state. We encourage voting and activism on the local, state and national levels.
We are a social outlet and source of support for secular people and people questioning or leaving religion. We value diversity, and seek to include people of all genders, races, sexual orientations, and cultures.
We create spaces for people to have respectful philosophical and intellectual discussions.
We provide service to the community and opportunities for secular people to make donations and to perform charitable work in the Lowcountry.
SHL helps people understand secular humanism as a valid ethical orientation. We demonstrate to the community and the state that secular people are good without god.
Building Community Beyond Belief
Through all of our activities, SHL strives to build a fun, welcoming, and supportive community for secular humanists in the Lowcountry.
In addition to our regular Member Gatherings, we dine out together at our Happy Humanist Hours and 5th Sunday Brunches. We watch and discuss films at our Movie Club, and we have a Book Club.
We offer several special interest mailing lists to help members stay informed, and we post our activities to Meetup and Facebook.
We create special Member Pins each year for our dues-paying members, and we originated “In Reason We Trust” South Carolina license plates.
Our Member Map Project allows members to see who else in our community lives near them in the hope of fostering greater member-to-member connections.
Mutual Aid: Exercising Progressive Values
We raise money for locally operated non-profit organizations that work in alignment with our values through our Charity of the Quarter program.
We collaborate with community groups and nonprofits to amplify the impact of volunteer efforts and charitable donations. We prioritize the integration of principles like empathy, reason, and compassion into all projects, demonstrating how secular ethics can positively influence charitable work.
We participate in or organize donation drives for supplies, or for resources for organizations addressing critical issues like poverty, disaster relief, education, and healthcare. We demonstrate our commitment to equity and inclusion by identifying opportunities to provide support to marginalized or vulnerable populations.
We seek to identify and promote volunteer opportunities where our members can directly benefit the local community through efforts such as food distribution, environmental clean-ups and educational and mentoring programs. We aim to leverage the diverse talents of group members to provide specialized support, such as tutoring, legal assistance, or technical expertise, to community initiatives.
Through our events and programs we raise public awareness about important social issues and encourage others to contribute time or resources to meaningful causes.
Secular Activism: Defending Separation of Church and State
We meet monthly on the 2nd Sunday to provide a consistent drumbeat for secular activists and community members to collaborate and share ideas.
We engage in advocacy to support and promote policies that uphold secular values, including separation of church and state, religious and intellectual freedom, environmental protection, and equality and opportunity for all.
We share knowledge to educate and inform the community about the importance of the separation of church and state, individual freedoms and rights, equity for marginalized communities, and sustainable living through workshops, discussions, and events.
We seek to foster community connections by bringing together diverse voices and perspectives united by common goals. We work in partnership with other activist organizations and like-minded individuals to amplify collective impact.
Working collaboratively, we develop clear, actionable steps to press for change. We organize collective action such as rallies, protests, letter-writing campaigns, and other community mobilization to make voices heard and influence policy.
Above all, we provide mutual support, solidarity and community as we navigate the challenging political and social climate together.
