Tour Composting Center and/or Mt Pleasant Water Treatment Facility
In addition to our tour of the Recycling Center on April 10th, we are promoting two other opportunities to learn more about waste management and sustainable living in the lowcountry. These are public events put on by the facility operators for the general public so they will not be on our Meetup. Space is limited on these tours so we are encouraging people to register now.

On Saturday, April 19th, McGill Compost will be leading tours of Charleston County’s Bees Ferry Composting Facility. Each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and is a family-friendly event open to the public. Closed-toe shoes are required. Personal protective equipment will be provided. And they are giving out FREE COMPOST! Bring Your Own Bucket and fill up to two 5-gallon buckets after the tour. We are encouraging SHL members to RSVP for the 11 am tour.

On Thursday, April 24th, there is a Community Plant Tour of Mount Pleasant Waterworks’ Henry Clay Duffie Water Resource Facility. During the tour, you’ll learn about the processes that ensure the wastewater they treat is safe before going back into the environment, explore their on-site laboratory to see how they test and monitor water quality, and discover the critical role MPW plays in environmental stewardship. We are encouraging SHL members to RSVP for the 11:30 am tour. There are only 25 participants allowed, so sign up now. Participants must be at least 9 years old. All participants must wear closed-toe shoes and adhere to safety guidelines. The tour involves walking and climbing a flight of stairs. Participants must sign a liability release form prior to the tour. Tours are weather-dependent and may be canceled in case of rain.
The Lowcountry Land Trust has a whole slate of events for Earth Month, including several volunteer opportunities, which you can check out on their site.
