SHL Family Picnic

May 9, 2009

Wannamaker Park, North Charleston

Playgrounds, soccer balls, sand boxes, and juice boxes: not the sorts of things you expect to see at a gathering of the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry. But, then, this is no ordinary SHL event. This is our first ever Family Picnic!

We're planning a picnic for non-religious families with kids and all who support them. We'll meet 11AM-3PM on Saturday May 9th in North Charleston's Wannamaker Park. Each family will bring their own main dish and a side dish or dessert to share. The SHL will provide everything else: drinks (non-alcoholic), plates, napkins, forks, etc. and a grill ready to cook anything you bring to put on it.

We will also be bringing things to play with and planning some activities. Perhaps freeze tag, or a softball game, or just having fun in the playground. Nearby our site there are sprinklers to play in and a nature trail to walk on. What we do depends somewhat on who will be attending.

Just for fun! A chance for non-religious parents raising kids in the lowcountry to get to know each other...and a chance for the kids to be kids!
Directions: Take exit 205-B from I-26 and turn left after about 1.5 miles to enter the park. (Click here for an interactive map of the roads to the park entrance.) Unless you have purchased a park pass, you will need to pay a $1 admission fee for each person. Once inside, follow the signs to Park Center. We have rented tables and a "tent" just beside the center and the lagoon. (Click here for a Park Map.)

What to Bring: Bring a main dish for your family (maybe something to put on the grill that we will have going) and a side dish or dessert to share. If you're thinking about playing in the sprinklers, you might want a towel or change of clothing. Of course, sunscreen and insect repellent are generally good things to bring to any outdoor event in South Carolina. We will provide everything else.

If you have any questions, write to (And, if you can, please write to that address in advance to let us know how many people from your group will be coming and the age of any children you are bringing to help us plan appropriately. Thanks!)
