Most of us recognize that climate change is real, and represents a serious threat to our future - yet we continue to do almost nothing to stop it. Some of the reasons why we continually fail to take significant national and international action are certainly economic and political, but much of our resistance is psychological.
In this talk, our guest Professor Jen Wright (College of Charleston) will explore the underlying psychological mechanisms that make it possible to, on the one hand, believe something to be true - yet, on the other hand, do nothing about it. We will also explore how it is possible to believe things that have been demonstrated to be clearly false, or to deny things that have been demonstrated to be clearly true. And finally, we will discuss why the issue of climate change has turned out to be a "perfect storm", exactly the sort of problem our brains were wired to ignore.
