Upcoming SHL Event:

Judaism without Belief: Jewishness from a Post-Religious Perspective

April 6, 2017 7:30 pm

Theodore S. Stern Student Center
71 George Street

This is not an SHL sponsored event, but it certainly seems like something that would be of interest to SHL members. And so, we are announcing the CofC event here:

Shulem Deen, author of All Who Go Do Not Return and recipient of the 2015 National Jewish Book Award will present Judaism without Belief: An Exploration of Jewishness from a Post-Religious Perspective on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 7:30PM in the Stern Center Ballroom (4th floor), 71 George Street, Charleston, SC.

After decades steeped in Jewish faith and observance, Deen rejected Judaism's foundational principles, and consciously detached from faith and observance. Nevertheless, he still feels the tug of heritage and bonds of kinship. As American Jews experience an unprecedented paradigm shift in their relation to both peoplehood and religiosity, many are asking, what does Jewishness mean today? In this personal and provocative presentation, Shulem Deen will offer thoughts on the continued relevance of Jewishness in his own life, and how we might engage with tradition in a post-religious, post-ethnic American Jewish reality.
