SHL at Flowertown Festival 2015

The following e-mail announcement was sent by Amy Monsky to the SHL News and Updates mailing list:

SHL is excited to once again be a part of the Flowertown Festival in Summerville for the third year!

This as an excellent opportunity to let other like-minded people

in the area know that not only are they not alone, but that Charleston

is home to one of the most active and vibrant humanist communities in

the region.

We hope to help remove the stigma of the negative stereotype

traditionally associated with atheists and atheism by demonstrating that

we, as humanists, atheists, agnostics, and others, are normal, happy,

ethical, and productive citizens, just like they are. We want to show

that we are not monsters!

We can do this by presenting a positive image of ourselves, by

sharing what we DO believe in, by showing that we have an identity of

our own (as opposed to merely a reaction to religion), but, most

importantly, by just being there.

This is where you come in!

We need people to represent the Secular Humanists of the

Lowcountry by volunteering to staff our booth. If you're not able to

volunteer, please show your support by stopping by to say hi! We have

the same booth (M262) as last year, which is across from the children's

By showing up and taking our place, we send a clear message that

we exist and that we are a significant demographic. Humanism embraces

the philosophy that we are responsible for making the world a better

place for everyone. Each of us can embrace humanism by putting the

"human" in it. Let's put a smiling face with the name! Please consider

coming out, both literally and metaphorically, at the festival.

The festival runs Friday, 3/27, through Sunday, 3/29. We have

broken the weekend down into 4-hour shifts. Several people have already

contacted me about volunteering, but we cannot have to many people to

represent our organization, so please look them over and let us know

which shift(s) you are interested in by filling out this form.

Friday and Saturday: 8-noon, 11-3pm, 2-6pm

Sunday: 8-noon, 11-3pm, 2-5pm

We could also use some able-bodied people to help set up the tent on Thursday as well as break it down on Sunday.

So many people are waiting to see what we have to say and what we

have to offer! Thank you for being a part of what makes SHL and our

region great!
