The following e-mail announcement was sent by Stephanie Greene to the Volunteer Network mailing list:
It was great to see such a good turnout at the community potluck to benefit the disadvantaged last month! While not as many came to partake in our meal as expected, I later found out that another program (distributing backpacks, clothes, shoes, AND food), originally scheduled for the subsequent Sunday, was forced to reschedule to 12/14, as a result conflicting with our event. Regardless, I heard many volunteers say that they enjoyed being able to immediately see the benefits of their work. Due to its popularity and obvious need, SHL plans to continue to support the community potluck throughout the year. (I will distribute a sign-up sheet when the time comes.)
For the month of January however, SHL will be assisting with also much needed repairs to The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center (DNLCC.)
DNLCC's mission is to "keep children safe from abuse, and when abuse occurs, to work with [the] community to bring healing to these children and their families." In working towards this goal, "DNLCC coordinates with more than 30 partner agencies in the community as a multi-disciplinary team to take appropriate action and put a plan in place for the abused child and family. DNLCC also strives to increase public awareness of the issue of child abuse. Since 1991, DNLCC has helped over 21,000 children and their families"
There are several projects that DNLCC needs help with (gardening, painting, cleaning, etc.) The project(s) we help with will depend on how many volunteers we have available. As a result, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, if you would like to participate so that we can make sure the proper tools are available. The event will take place:
Saturday January 24th, 9am- 12p
Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center
1061 King Street
Charleston, SC 29403
All skill levels (and no skill level) are welcome to participate. The event is open to participants ages 8 and up; all children must be well supervised. Please plan to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.
Again, please email me at email@example.com to RSVP or with any questions.
Hope to see everyone soon!
