|SHL Call to Action! Last chance!|
The following e-mail announcement was sent by Amy Monsky to the SHL News and Updates mailing list:
I first wrote to you about our call to action to raise money for DD2 students a week and a half ago. Since that time, I have been blown away by the generosity of SHL's members! We have raised just over $2400!! And the majority of that was raised within the first 24 hours. I am writing you now to say that today is the last day of our fundraiser for DD2 students. If you had wanted to give but haven't yet, it's not too late! Click here for online giving or if you'd like to mail a check, you can make it payable to SHL with DD2 in the memo line and mail it to PO Box 32256, Charleston, SC 29417. The original request for help is at the bottom of this message.
Also, you may be interested in reading this article by our own Will Moredock in today's City Paper. It's a fantastic assessment of some of the coverage this story has garnered.
Thank you for your help showing that Charleston area's Humanists are good without God!
Original request for help:
I am writing you tonight with a very special request. The Secular
Humanists of the Lowcountry would like to ask for your support in a
charity drive we are sponsoring to support Dorchester District Two (DD2)
needy students. We will be matching (and exceeding) funds collected by
Oakbrook Elementary school that was originally intended for an illegal
church fundraiser. Fortunately, after a parent contacted the Appignani
Humanist Legal Center for help, the district reversed its decision and
will no longer endorse church fundraisers. Thanks to the courage of the
parents involved, the food and money collected will be given directly
to needy DD2 students. Even though the school was absolutely in the
wrong and could have easily encouraged the students in a community
service project that didn't violate church/state separation, many
Christians see this as an attack on their religion and refuse to
acknowledge atheists as charitable people. We all know that the general
opinion of atheists is low, but the level of hate was exceedingly high
with this story. Let's turn this around and make it positive! Let's
come together to support the DD2 needy students as a community!
Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry would like to take this opportunity
to make a positive statement and to show that we DO care about our
fellow citizens. We don't just talk the talk; we walk the walk! Can
you help us by making a donation to this very worthy cause?
if you are able to watch the 6pm news tonight, please check out ABC
News 4. I will be giving the humanist side of this story, and they will
also air an updated segment I did last week regarding the religious
test for office in the SC constitution.
Have a great weekend and I hope to see you at our solstice party on Sunday!
