The following e-mail announcement was sent by John Childs to the Book Group mailing list:
This past Sunday we had a great review of the book Incognito by David Eagleman facilitated by our new member Vera. Thanks a lot Vera, great job. We went out to EAT at THE RED ORCHID. Remember to bring your restaurant suggestions with you to the next meeting. We try to get that business done at the beginning of the meeting.
Our book for May will be THE GOD VIRUS by Darrel Ray. This book will be reviewed by book group on May 26th. As usual the meeting will be held at the Barnes and Noble on Sam Rittenberg Hwy at 4:00 Pm lasting until 5:30.
Below is a brief description of the book supplied by Amazon at their book site.
"What makes religion so powerful? How does it weave its way into our political system? Why do people believe and follow obvious religious charlatans? What makes people profess deep faith even as they act in ways that betray that faith? What makes people blind to the irrationalities of their religion yet clearly see those of others? If these questions interest you, this book will give you the tools to understand religion and its power in you, your family and your culture. For thousands of years, religion has woven its way through societies and people as if it were part and parcel to that society or person. In large measure it was left unexplained and unchallenged, it simply existed. Those who attempted to challenge and expose religion were often persecuted, excommunicated, shunned, or even executed."
This should be a very interesting read with the added attraction of the Author being our speaker at the regular monthly SHL meeting at Gage Hall this coming September.
Remember reading the book is not a requirement and many times those who don't have as much to contribute to our discourse as those who do. So we look forward to seeing you all there.
