|SHL Sept/Oct Charity of the Quarter|
The following e-mail announcement was sent by Amy Monsky to the SHL News and Updates mailing list:
Every two months, SHL selects a charity to sponsor and passes the basket, so to speak, by asking our members to make a donation in support of this charity. This quarter (September and October), SHL has chosen to partner with Camp Quest South Carolina and join Foundation Beyond Belief's international team in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk, a fundraising event to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Thousands of participants raise funds for vital, lifesaving research and patient services.
Although all the charities we sponsor are important, this one is unique in that it is a united effort of the humanist and freethought movement in an effort to raise $1,000,000. Sound like a lot? It is, but the Stiefel Freethought Foundation has pledged to match contributions, dollar for dollar, up to the first $500,000. So far, Foundation Beyond Belief teams have raised over $320,000. Add in the matching contribution, and we have topped $640,000!!
While we in the freethought movement don't have a unified set of beliefs we must adhere to, we all agree that this life is the only life we have. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society works hard to save and improve the lives of people across the world. Together, we can help save those lives. Together, we can make a difference. Please consider making a contribution to SHL's team. You can do so in one of two ways.
1. You can donate to SHL on behalf of the team, and SHL will write a check for all money collected to our Light the Night team.
2. You can donate directly to our team at http://pages.lightthenight.org/sc/Charlstn12/SecularHumanistsoftheLowcountryandCampQuestSouthCarolinaFBB. If you'd like to walk with our team, you can also register at this link. The walk will be Thursday, 11/1 at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. The walk starts at 7pm, with registration/check-in beginning at 5:30pm.
