|Volunteer Opportunities for September|
Please leave room in your schedule for the following SHL volunteer opportunities for September:
On Saturday September 6th, a team from the SHL will be doing an "adopt-a-highway pickup" at our stretch of Harbor View Road on James Island. Picking up trash may not sound like your idea of fun. But, you'd be surprised! The stimulating conversation and unusual discoveries -- along with the knowledge that you're part of the solution to the problem of the messy litterbugs in SC -- can make this a very enjoyable experience. Meet at 8:50AM in the parking lot of the First Federal Bank near the Pig.
Then, on Saturday September 27th, a team from the SHL will be helping to fix up and paint one of the "cottages" at the Carolina Youth Development Center in North Charleston. The children living there are healing from abuse, neglect, abandonment and/or emotional disturbances. Last time we were there we painted a common room, but this time we'll actually be fixing up the dorm that they live in. Nancy Worley, our volunteer coordinator, said "their cottage, while adequate, has the shabby quality of most quasi-government housing operating on a small budget". Between our labor and some monetary donations, we're hoping to make it really nice for the six girls who live there! To help out, show up wearing painting clothes at 5055 Lackawanna Boulevard between 10 and 3. Please write to Nancy at email@example.com if you're planning to be there.

|Re: Volunteer Opportunities for September|
Good question, Matt. At the moment it looks like Hanna will hit up in North Carolina and my previous experience is that we have beautiful weather here in Charleston when that happens. But, we still could get either rain or a direct hit from this storm, so...
I'll check with Roger Prevost who runs our Adopt-a-highway program. If you're thinking of helping out, perhaps it would be a good idea to touch base with him first at firstname.lastname@example.org just in case there are any last minute changes in plans.
