How did you become non-religious?

I notice a lot of these posts start out "I was raised Catholic". Well, I was rasied Catholic, but I never really believed it. I just went through the motions to please those people I thought it important to please. I never believed in Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy either, but I milked it for all it was worth as long as I could. Finally, when I was about 13, I got up the nerve to discuss it with my parents because I didn't want to go to church any longer. I had always been struck by the intollerance inherent in religion and no longer wanted to take part. A long discussion followed during which I learned that we went to church every Sunday and my younger brother and I were being raised in the Catholic Church because my parents had promised my father's mother that we would be raised in the church. The end result was that as long as my brother and I promised not to mention any of this to our grandparents (who lived hundreds of miles away) we wouldn't have to go to church. And from that time on none of us ever did. My brother is an Atheist too, I don't know how much I influenced that decision. My mother never actually said, but I am reasonably sure she had her doubts as well. My father pretty much believed in beer.
