The three main community service and charitable activities of the SHL are:
  • SHL Volunteer Network: Each month, a team of SHL members goes to a local charitable organization and volunteers to do whatever is needed. For instance, we may be painting, cleaning, sorting donations, or putting together aid packages. Groups that have benefitted from our efforts include the Lowcountry Food Bank, Windwood Farm and the Carolina Youth Development Center. The arrangements are made in advance by an SHL coordinator, sometimes without much advance notice. So, the best way to become involved is to join the SHL and make sure we know your e-mail address. An announcement about volunteer activities is mailed to all members each month.
  • Adopt-a-Highway: The SHL is responsible for keeping a portion of the highway on James Island looking neat and clean. More volunteers are always appreciated. Keep an eye on the newsletter for announcements regarding clean-up dates.
  • Charity of the Quarter: In addition to our other community service activities, the SHL also is involved in the collection of money for charities. Each quarter, we will announce to our members the name of the charity we are currently collecting for. SHL members then pool their donations and we give the charity a single (hopefully, quite large) check from the SHL. Charities we have given to include Run for the Cure, Lowcountry Orphan Relief, the Carolina Youth Development Center, and Windwood Farm. Donations can be made by check or credit card. To pay by check, make out a check to "SHL" with "Charity of the Quarter" written as a note in the lower left corner and bring it to our meeting or mail it. To pay by credit card, please click the "Donate" button below.

Charity of the Quarter is on Summer Break: Each two months beginning in September and ending in April, the SHL has a charity drive for a different deserving local organization. This "Charity of the Quarter" program takes a brief hiatus during the summer, just as our monthly meetings do.

If, however, you are really interested in making a donation to a charity through the SHL today, you may use the form below. Money donated during these summer months will be pooled and given in September to The Teacher's Supply Closet whose mission statement says they "serve the educational and creative needs of children in the Tri-County area by providing a unique means to offer free merchandise, donated from businesses and individuals, for teachers to use in their classrooms".This helps that organization financially and can help improve the reputation of the SHL. (Note that this donation is tax deductible. You will receive an e-mail confirmation that can be used as a receipt.)

(Of course, individually, SHL members are involved in many more charitable activities than just these. Individual members give money and volunteer their time to many different organizations.)
